Fact Check: Has Registered Post Service Been Discontinued? India Post Refutes Viral Claim
Both Registered Post and Speed Post are highly valued as they are considered 'accountable services', which means that detailed records are maintained at each stage of transmission.

The Department of Posts has issued a clarification that its 'Registered Post' service is not being discontinued, dismissing rumours surrounding it. Instead, the service has been integrated with 'Speed Post' to streamline operations.
"Fact Check: Registered Post is not being discontinued. India Post has upgraded the service by merging it with Speed Post," India Post said in a post on X on Wednesday.
In an official press release, the Ministry of Communications explained that postal services are being streamlined.
“In order to streamline mail operations, improve delivery timelines, and optimise logistics resources, the Department of Posts has rationalised its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network,” it noted.

India Post has upgraded the service by merging it with Speed Post. Hereâs what that means for you. ð
Both services are highly valued as they are considered 'accountable services', which means that detailed records are maintained at each stage of transmission to ensure transparency and traceability of the delivery system.
'Registered Post' is addressee-specific, delivered only to the intended recipient or their authorised representative. In contrast, 'Speed' Post is address-specific, meaning it can be delivered to anyone available at the given address. Now, the two services are being integrated for a more efficient delivery mechanism.
India Post explained that even though the services have been merged for operational efficiency, it will still maintain key features of ‘Registered Post’. These include person-specific delivery, delivery receipt with real-time tracking, and acknowledgments.
“Now, send ‘Registered Post’ with the speed of ‘Speed Post’: no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes,” India Post said. This means that customers will now have the option to send their parcel through the ‘Speed Post with registration’ service. This will ensure faster delivery while still maintaining person-specific delivery.
In addition to quicker delivery, customers will also get these premium 'Speed Post' services for the 'registered' post parcel:
End-to-end online tracking
Real-time delivery updates
OTP-based secure delivery
Cash on Delivery (COD) services
Credit facility
Applicable volume-based discount
National Account Facility for the corporate customers
