Delhi is set to get its fourth women chief minister in Rekha Gupta on Thursday, as the national capital decks for the swearing-in ceremony. The event will be attended by senior BJP and NDA leaders.
The Bharatiya Janata Party won the assembly elections on Feb. 8. The BJP’s comeback to power in Delhi after 26 years ended the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decade-long rule in the national capital.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly elections took place on Feb. 5, with the BJP securing 48 out of the 70 seats, while the AAP was restricted to just 22 seats.
Who Is Rekha Gupta
Rekha Gupta, 50, is a first-time MLA of the BJP chosen for the top role. Parvesh Verma, who emerged as the giant-killer by defeating former CM Arvind Kejriwal in the recent elections, was named by the BJP as the deputy CM.
Gupta will be the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi. The three other women to hold the top position include late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, late Congress leader Sheila Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party's Atishi.
Notably, Gupta was elected as a legislator in the recently concluded assembly elections by defeating the AAP's Bandana Kumari from the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) assembly constituency.
A lawyer by profession, Gupta entered politics as the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) President from 1996 to 1997. She later moved into municipal governance, winning the Delhi Councillor elections from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and securing another term in 2012. She has also led the South Delhi Municipal Corporation as Mayor.
Gupta also holds the position of general Secretary in Delhi BJP and previously served as the national vice president of BJP’s Mahila Morcha.
