Cyclone 'Biparjoy' intensified into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' on Sunday morning

As per the bulletin issued by Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC), the system is moving nearly northwards under the influence of two active anticyclonic circulations, one located over west India to the east-northeast of the system centre and another located over the Arabian peninsular and the adjoining west-central Arabian sea to the west-northwest of the system centre.

Due to the variation in the strength of these anticyclonic circulations in the middle and upper tropospheric levels and depending upon the dominance of one of these anti-cyclonic circulations over the period of time, the system has changed the path in the past and also, it is likely to change the direction of movement once further during the forecast.

Associated maximum sustained wind speed is 90 knots gusting to 110 knots. The estimated central pressure is 966 hpa. Sea condition is likely to be phenomenal over east-central and adjoining west-central & northeast Arabian sea.

As per IMD's prediction, the ESCS Biparjoy will cross Saurashtra and Kutch, and adjacent Paskitan coasts around noon of June 15. Although by June 15, Cyclone Biparjoy will gradually lose some intensity and is being categorized into very severe cyclonic storm.

"The very severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' (pronounced as 'Biporjoy') over the east-central Arabian Sea moved north-north-eastwards with a speed of nine kmph during past six hours, intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 0530 hours over the same region, about 580 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 480 km south-southwest of Porbandar, 530 km south-southwest of Dwarka, 610 km south-southwest of Naliya and 780 km south of Karachi (Pakistan)," the IMD said in a bulletin.

"The cyclone is very likely to move nearly northward till the morning of June 14, then move north-northeast wards and 'cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon of June 15 as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph", it said.

Senior Scientist at the IMD, DS Pai, said the "exact place where it will make landfall will become clearer in the coming days".

The name of this cyclonic storm which originated in the southeast arabian sea is called Cyclone Biparjoy, the name of this cyclone has been given by Bangladesh.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), weather forecasters around the world give each tropical cyclone a name to avoid confusion. The previous cyclonic storm which originated in the Bay of Bengal was in the month of May 2023 and was called as Cyclone Mocha.

The RSMC New Delhi Tropical Cyclone Center is responsible to name the tropical cyclones that have formed over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea when they have reached the relevant intensity.
