Close on the heels of rival Mother Dairy's price hike, Amul announced on Wednesday that the prices of its fresh pouch milk will increase by Rs 2 per litre from May 1 in all markets across the country.

Mother Dairy had on Tuesday increased milk prices by up to Rs 2 per litre, effective April 30.

The increase of Rs 2 per litre translates to a range of 3–4% rise in MRP, which is much lower than average food inflation, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation said in its press release.

With a Rs 2 hike, Taaza’s 1-litre pouch will cost Rs 57, while that of the Cow branded milk packs will be Rs 59 in Delhi, Mumbai and UP markets.

Similarly, now a 1-litre pouch of buffalo milk will cost Rs 75, while prices of the Gold branded milk stand revised to Rs 69 in Delhi, Mumbai, and UP.

Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad, Saurashtra and Kutch, the 1-litre pack of Cow milk will cost Rs 55, while that of Gold has been revised to Rs 67. Its Buffalo milk will cost Rs 73 per litre in these markets, while its T-Special's 1-litre pouch will be revised upwards to Rs 63.

For the 500-ml pouches of its Shakti, Cow and Taaza branded milk, the prices are revised to Rs 31, Rs 29, and Rs 28 in Gujarat.

GCMMF pointed out that it had been offering additional 50 ml and 100 ml milk on each 1 litre and 2 litre packs, respectively, for almost five months in the last year.

The Amul brand owner said since January 2025, its 1-litre pack prices have been reduced by Re 1 across all markets. The federation added that it has not hiked prices of fresh pouch milk since June 2024.

While justifying the price hike, the union attributed it to "increase in input costs of production of milk to our 36 lakh milk producers".

It stressed that its member unions have also increased farmer's prices in the same proportion over the last one year.

"Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and to encourage them for higher milk production," the statement said.
