Sensex, Nifty End Little Changed; Bajaj Twins Outperform

Closing Bell

It was a day of recoveries for India's benchmark indices with both the indices ending little changed after recovering from the lowest point of the day.

The S&P BSE Sensex recovered over 400 points from the day's low to end 9 points higher at 46,263. The NSE Nifty 50 index too recovered 120 points from the lowest point of the day to end 9 points higher at 13,567.

Among the top gainers today - it was the Bajaj twins - Finance and Finserv that emerged as the outperformers. Bajaj Finance ended at a record high, with gains of over 5%. The stock also crossed the 5,000 per share mark for the first time ever.

Within the sectoral indices, it was the Nifty Media index that outperformed, ending with gains of 1.8%. The Metal index recovered its losses to end with gains of 0.8% while the Nifty Auto index saw gains of 0.6% in today's session.

The top performers of Monday - FMCG and PSU Banks were the top laggards in today's session. The PSU Bank index ended 1.5% lower while the FMCG index declined 1.3%.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index ended 0.5% higher while the Smallcap index rose 0.2%.

914 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 977 stocks posted losses.

Opening Bell

Indian equity markets have opened lower in today's session as the sentiment across the Asia Pacific remains muted after a strong rally.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.3% lower at 46,109 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened 10 points lower at 13,547.

Most sectoral indices have opened with a negative bias. The Nifty I.T. index is down 0.4% while the PSU Bank index has declined 0.3% at the start of trade. Other indices are trading little changed.

The broader markets too are flat at the start of trade. The Nifty Midcap index is unchanged from Monday's levels while the Smallcap index is up 0.2%.

1,244 stocks on the NSE are trading with gains while 697 have opened with losses.

Current Market Update

Three Days Of Sideways Movement

Good Morning!

Indian equity markets have had three days of sideways movement but the S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 closed at a new record high despite modest gains on Monday.

Futures, however, are indicating that the indices may open with a negative bias in today's session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, fell 0.35% to 13,543 as of 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank continue to remain in the F&O ban. Sectoral indices like metals, which ended at a two-year high on Monday, and FMCG, which hit another record high on Monday, will remain in focus.

Most Asian markets are declining this morning after a mixed overnight session on Wall Street. Benchmark indices in Japan, South Korea, Australia and China are trading lower.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading higher by 50 points but are off the session's highs. The index fell 0.6% on Monday. The S&P 500 fell for the fourth straight day, clocking its longest losing streak since September.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.4% to $46.81 per barrel, while gold was flat at $1,827/Oz.
