Indian stock market opened sharply lower on Wednesday, following weak global market cues, as surging crude oil prices and rising global bond yields continue to weigh on investor sentiment amid the escalating US-Iran war in the Middle East.

The benchmark BSE Sensex opened 472.96 points, or 0.61%, lower at 76,471.32, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 197.80 points, or 0.82%, to open at 23,858.00. The Bank Nifty index opened 403.15 points, or 0.70%, lower at 57,006.45.

Globally, Asian markets extended the risk-off sentiment, reflected in overnight Wall Street performance. Japan's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's KOSPI both slipped more than 2% in early trade.

US stock ended sharply lower amid surging Treasury yields, as elevated oil prices raised inflation concerns and risks of tightened monetary policy by the US Federal Reserve.

On the geopolitical front, renewed military attacks between the US and Iran have intensified concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global crude oil shipments.

Stock Market Today LIVE: Bank Nifty Faces Resistance At 57,570–57,600

Technically, 57,570–57,600 continues to remain an immediate resistance zone for Bank Nifty, followed by the stronger hurdle at 58,025.

A sustained move above these levels will be required for Nifty Bank to establish a meaningful directional recovery. On the downside, 57,180 remains the immediate support, with the index likely to remain vulnerable if this level is breached. The momentum setup has weakened, with the RSI slipping to 48.34 and remaining below its RSI average of 50.72, indicating subdued momentum and a lack of strong buying participation at current levels, said Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities.

Stock Market Today LIVE: Support For Nifty Lies At 24,000 – 23,950 Zone: Sachin Gupta Of Choice Broking

From a technical standpoint, the Nifty 50 formed a high-wave candlestick pattern on the daily timeframe, indicating indecision between bulls and bears. The index continues to trade below all key moving averages, while the short-term moving averages remain in a downward trend. The 10-day EMA has also slipped below the 50-day and 100-day EMAs, indicating weakening short-term momentum. The RSI has declined to 42.86, while the MACD remains below the zero line with the red histogram expanding, suggesting that bearish momentum is gradually strengthening, said Sachin Gupta, VP – Research, Technical Research, at Choice Broking.

The 24,000–23,950 zone remains the crucial support area. A decisive break and sustained move below this zone could drag Nifty towards 23,800 and 23,600. On the upside, 24,200 remains the immediate hurdle, followed by 24,400, he added.

Stock Market Today LIVE: Nifty 50 Lacks Directional Leadership; Midcap, Smallcap Outlook Bullish: Laurence Balanco of CLSA

The benchmark Nifty 50 has been consolidating below the 200-day moving average (DMA), leaving the index trapped within the range that has persisted since nearly two years, according to Laurence Balanco of CLSA.

He identified the longer-term range for Nifty 50 at 21,700 - 22,182, and resistance at 26,000 - 26,300.

“The price action continues to consolidate beneath both the 200DMA and the June-July highs at 24,515 - 24,801. The prolonged period of indecision reflects the lack of clear directional leadership within the large-cap universe,” Balanco said in a note.

This leaves the index trapped within the broader trading range that has been in place since the October 2024 peak, he added.
