Stock Market Holiday: Are NSE, BSE Closed On Janmashtami 2025?
This week, between Aug. 11 and Aug. 17, the stock markets will remain open only for four trading sessions.
Janmashtami is a major Hindu festival that marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. As per the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishan Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad. This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 16.
The festive day of Janmashtami is a public holiday in many states. So, schools, government offices and banks will remain closed in several states on this day.
However, stock markets usually stay open on Janmashtami. The NSE and BSE holiday calendar does not list the festive day as a scheduled holiday. But this year, Janmashtami falls on a Saturday.
Stock markets usually remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays. So, this means that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE will remain closed on the occasion of Janmashtami. The stock market closure will be due to the weekend, not the festive holiday. Market activities are expected to resume on Monday, allowing investors to participate in trading activities.
This week, between Aug. 11 and Aug. 17, the stock markets will remain open only for four trading sessions. Besides the weekend holidays, markets are also set to be closed for Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 15.

Trading on the equities segment happens on all days of the week (other than Saturdays and Sundays and holidays declared by the Exchange in advance). The market timings of the equities segment are given below:
A) Pre-open session
Order entry & modification Open: 9:00 a.m.
Order entry & modification Close: 9:08 a.m.

B) Regular trading session
Normal / Limited Physical Market Open: 9:15 a.m.
Normal / Limited Physical Market Close: 3:30 p.m.
C) Closing Session
The Closing Session is held between 3:40 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
D) Block Deal Session Timings
Morning Window: This window shall operate between 8:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Afternoon Window: This window shall operate between 2:05 p.m. to 2:20 p.m.
The Exchange may, however, close the market on days other than the above-scheduled holidays or may open the market on days originally declared as holidays. The Exchange may also extend, advance, or reduce trading hours when it deems fit and necessary.
