Meanwhile, among the gainers were shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and Bajaj Finserv Ltd.

The benchmark indices extended their fall to the sixth consecutive day, the most since Nov. 18, 2024. Realty, auto and oil and gas sectors were the top sectoral losers.

The Nifty 50 fell as much as 1.19% to 22,798.35, and the BSE Sensex declined 1.19% to 75,388.39. The broader market tumbled more than the benchmark indices but recovered later in the session with the midcap index down 0.37% and the small-cap index slipping by 0.7%.

The small and mid-cap stocks are poised for further downside, as these stocks are testing the entry into the bear market on muted earnings and peaking domestic flows, according to Bernstein Research.
