Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2024 brings a local holiday in Mumbai, but will BSE and NSE remain open on Friday, Dec. 6?

The Maharashtra government has declared a local holiday for Mumbai and suburban districts on Dec. 6 on account of Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2024.
According to a circular issued by the General Administration Department, all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and suburban districts will remain closed on Mahaparinirvan Diwas, which marks the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar.
The local holiday in Mumbai has led to confusion about the operation of stock markets on Friday.
Are BSE, NSE Open Or Closed On Dec. 6?
There has been no official intimation about a stock market holiday from the BSE and NSE. According to the latest updates from the holiday calendar, BSE and NSE will continue to function as normal on Dec. 6.
However, it has been a traditional practice by the stock exchanges to declare stock market holidays on most of the local holidays in Mumbai and Maharashtra.
Remaining Stock Market Holidays This Year
As per the calendar issued by the NSE and BSE, there will be only one stock market holiday in December.
The stock markets will remain closed on December 25 on account of Christmas.
Stock Market Trading and Holiday Schedule
Trading on the equities segment happens on all days of the week (other than Saturdays and Sundays and holidays declared by the exchanges in advance). The market timings of the equities segment are as given below:
Pre-open session
Order entry & modification Open: 09:00 am.
Order entry & modification Close: 09:08 am.
*with random closure in the last one minute. Pre-open order matching starts immediately after close of pre-open order entry.
Regular trading session
Normal / Limited Physical Market Open: 09:15 am.
Normal / Limited Physical Market Close: 03:30 pm.
C) Closing Session
The Closing Session is held between 03:40 pm and 04:00 pm.
D) Block Deal Session Timings:
Morning Window: This window shall operate between 08:45 am to 09:00 am.
Afternoon Window: This window shall operate between 02:05 pm to 2:20 pm.
The stock exchange may, however, close the market on days other than the above scheduled holidays or may open the market on days originally declared as holidays. The Exchange may also extend, advance or reduce trading hours when it deems fit and necessary.

Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed to mark the death anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, who passed away on December 6, 1956, in Delhi. It serves as a day to honour the legacy of the iconic social reformer and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
