The stock market will remain closed for a total of 10 days in April due to two public holidays, along with regular weekend closures. As per the calendar issued by the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), trading will not take place on April 3 (Good Friday) and April 14 (Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti).

On these days, there will be no activity across segments that include equity derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB) and electronic gold receipts (EGR). The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will also remain shut on these dates due to public holidays.

In March 2026, the Indian stock markets (NSE and BSE) remained closed on Tuesday, March 3 (Holi), Thursday, March 26 (Ram Navami), and Tuesday, March 31 (Shri Mahavir Jayanti), with no trading in equity, derivatives, or SLB segments.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays In 2026

Beyond April, the market will observe nine more holidays through the rest of 2026. These are spread across major festivals and national holidays:

May 1: Maharashtra Day (Friday)

May 28: Bakri Id (Thursday)

June 26: Muharram (Friday)

Sept. 14: Ganesh Chaturthi (Monday)

Oct. 2: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (Friday)

Oct. 20: Dussehra (Tuesday)

Nov. 10: Diwali-Balipratipada (Tuesday)

Nov. 24: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev (Tuesday)

Dec. 25: Christmas (Friday)

Some holidays this year fall on weekends. These include Mahashivratri, Id-Ul-Fitr, Independence Day and Diwali Laxmi Pujan.

Muhurat Trading

Despite Diwali Laxmi Pujan falling on a Sunday this year, stock exchanges will open for a special Muhurat Trading session on November 8. This symbolic trading window marks the beginning of a new financial cycle for many investors. Exact timings for this session will be announced closer to the festival by both exchanges.

Stock Market Timings In India

On regular trading days, the Indian stock market follows a structured schedule:

Pre-Open Session

Trading begins with a pre-open window from 9:00 a.m. to 9:08 a.m.

[With random closure in the last one minute. Pre-open order matching starts immediately after the close of pre-open order entry.]

Regular Trading Hours

Normal / Limited Physical Market Open: 9:15 a.m. 

Normal / Limited Physical Market Close: 3:30 p.m.

Closing Session

After market hours, a closing session takes place between 3:40 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Block Deal Window

Block deals have two dedicated windows:

Morning: 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Afternoon: 2:05 p.m. to 2:20 p.m.

It should be noted that the Exchange can change its schedule if needed. It may close the market on days not listed as holidays or open it on days that were earlier declared as holidays. It can also change trading hours by extending, reducing or shifting them depending on the situation.
