Viral Professor Neha Singh Suspended By Galgotias University After Row? University Registrar Clarifies, Defends Institution

Amid speculations about the future of professor Neha Singh at Galgotias University following the Chinese robodog controversy at India AI Impact Summit and her LinkedIn profile's 'OpenToWork' image, the University Registrar on Thursday clarified that she has not been suspended.

Singh has been facing criticism for her remarks after the university showcased a Chinese robotic dog at the India AI Impact Summit expo at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. Following the controversy, the university was asked to leave the premises of the summit expo. Soon, her LinkedIn picture, which reads '#OpenToWork', also went viral.

However, speaking to ANI, Registrar Nitin Kumar Gaur clarified that they are currently investigating the matter.

"She [Neha Singh] is not suspended and has been told to stay... Until a complete investigation is done as to why such a mistake has been committed, such proceedings will continue... Because of one person's wrongdoing, the entire university should not be questioned... We are also citizens of India, and we definitely want our country to move forward," ANI quoted Gaur as saying.

Gaur said the university has already provided an explanation on the matter, adding that it was a "mistake" and they are "sorry for that."

"We never want the image of the university or the country to be ruined... We have vacated the stall from there (India AI Impact Summit)," he said.

The official noted that the university will be carrying out an investigation to understand why such a mistake happened and ensure this is not repeated in the future.

"If the image is ruined because of one mistake, then it is unacceptable," he stated.

Singh's comments on the robodog made headlines. Singh had told DD News that the robotic dog on display - called Orion - was "developed by the Centre of Excellence at Galgotias University."

However, it was later revealed to be Unitree Go2, which is a commercially available quadruped robot made by China-based Unitree Robotics. It is widely used across multiple educational settings.

In a statement, the university later clarified, "Galgotias has not built this robotic dog, nor have we claimed to do so. Our focus is on building young minds that will soon design, engineer and manufacture such technologies in India.”

Further, it stated that the robotic dog was acquired from a global robotics company in China, adding that the same was being used purely as a learning and demonstration tool for students.

Who Is Neha Singh?

Neha Singh is serving as an assistant professor at Galgotias University for more than two years now. Prior to this, she was associated with Sharda University.

Singh earned Bachelor's in B.Com, Business/Commerce from the University of Allahabad in 2005. She later completed her MBA from the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore.

According to PTI, Singh said the misunderstanding around the robodog came out due to unclear communication.

"The controversy happened because things may not have been expressed clearly and the intent may not have been properly understood," she said.
