(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Treasury sanctioned five Iranians it identified as linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for allegedly providing missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen.
“Treasury is targeting five Iranian officials who are associated with the IRGC-QF and Iran's ballistic missile programs,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement Tuesday. “Their actions have enabled the Huthis to launch missiles at Saudi cities and oil infrastructure. They have also disrupted humanitarian aid efforts in Yemen, and threatened freedom of navigation in key regional waterways.”
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Monday that Iran will continue to feel the “sting of sanctions” if it doesn't change the “unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen. These will be the strongest sanctions in history by the time we are complete.”
President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that he was walking away from a 2015 accord that restricted Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some economic sanctions.
Mehdi Azarpisheh, Mohammad Agha Ja'fari, Mahmud Bagheri Kazemabad, Javad Bordbar Shir Amin, Sayyed Mohammad Ali Haddadnezhad Tehrani, all identified as linked to the Revolutionary Guard, were designated for sanctions, according to a notice posted on Treasury's website Monday. The notice described the designations as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation related.
