(Bloomberg) -- RT, the state-backed TV network formerly called Russia Today, filed the first European Union court challenge against the bloc's sanctions in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.
The EU's General Court said in a tweet on Tuesday that the channel's French arm is contesting the EU's March 1 decision to impose “restrictive measures in view of Russia's actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.”
The EU and nations across the world have sought to clamp down on outlets such as RT and Sputnik News, which were blamed for peddling propaganda for President Vladimir Putin at a time when journalists in Russia are being threatened with jail sentences for news that dissents from the official line about the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile Netflix, TikTok, Samsung and credit card operators have joined the lengthening list of businesses cutting ties with Russia or reviewing their operations in the country as reputational and financial risks mount.
RT is seeking to put the EU ban on hold until judges have ruled on the case.
