Italy Expels Russian Officials Over Alleged Document Sale

Italy Expels Russian Officials After Reported Sale of Documents

Italy has expelled two Russian officials from the country after an Italian military officer was arrested for allegedly selling confidential documents to a Russian counterpart.

Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio described it as a “hostile act of extreme seriousness” at a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday. Russia's ambassador was summoned to Rome for an explanation.

The Italian officer at the center of the spy case worked at the military policy office of Italy's high command, according to people familiar with the matter.

“At the moment, we don't have any information about the reasons and circumstances of this detention,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “We hope that the very positive and constructive nature of Italo-Russian relations will continue.”
