The Indian aviation regulator, DGCA, is in the process of filling 90% of its vacancies in the next three months, said Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu.
During Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, in response to a query by Ashokrao Shankarrao Chavan, Naidu said that civil aviation has witnessed significant growth over the past 10 years.
"A lot of these new, highly technical posts have been created in the last 2–3 years," he said.
Currently, the DGCA is operating with only 50% of its sanctioned strength due to a shortage of technical personnel, Chavan questioned Naidu on DGCA's strength.
"Last year, we recruited for 103 posts. By the end of this year, we aim to recruit for 190 posts in October. We are in the process of filling around 90% of these vacancies soon," he noted.
The Civil Aviation Ministry had recommended the creation of more posts in the DGCA in response to the sector's growth, to ensure the safety and security of civil aviation, said Naidu.
"The posts under discussion were created in the last 2–3 years," he added.
"This is a limited pool of subject matter experts, hence the recruitment process is quite rigorous. We are making efforts to reduce the recruitment timeline as well," the minister said.
