Graffiti eulogising top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, who was killed in an encounter with security forces last week, have come up in many parts of Srinagar.

Even as most of Srinagar and other districts have been under strict restrictions since Saturday, wall writings have been spotted at many places.

“Burhan is our hero,” says one such slogan on the shutter of a shop in Amira Kadal near the city centre of Lal Chowk, which has been shut since Saturday.

On an adjacent shop, “Today we mourn, lion is no more” has been written in spray paint.

“Burhan still alive” has been painted on many surfaces in the city, along with the words ‘AK-47' – a reference to the assault rifle which Wani brandished in his pictures and videos on social media.

After Wani and his two associates were killed on Friday, deadly violence on the streets of the Valley has so far left 23 civilians dead, allegedly in security forces action. One policeman was also killed in mob violence.

Such graffiti has been spotted in the past as well, during the protests of 2008 and 2010 and after the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013.
