Brazil's Bolsonaro Awake and Recovering After Scheduled Surgery

(Bloomberg) -- Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro is awake and recovering after undergoing a previously scheduled surgery on Monday to reverse a colostomy carried out after he was stabbed on the campaign trail last September.

The seven-hour operation took place without complications and without the need for blood transfusions, according to a statement released by the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, which added that the president is receiving treatment to prevent infection and thrombosis.

Bolsonaro should be released from hospital in 10 days, according to a government spokesman. He is expected to resume his duties as president in 48 hours, with Vice President Hamilton Mourao in charge until then. Pre-surgery exams on Sunday had shown Bolsonaro to be in "normal" conditions and his spokesman, Otavio Rego Barros, said the president was in good spirits.

Shortly after the operation, Bolsonaro published a tweet indicating that all had gone well.

The stabbing by a fanatic in September shocked Latin America's largest nation and, according to political analysts at the time, triggered a sympathy vote and helped him clinch victory in October's election.
