Economists See Asia’s Recovery Moving at Uneven Pace

Asia's pace of recovery is expected to be uneven this year as some countries have managed to bring the coronavirus under control while others still struggle to contain its spread. Australia, China and Taiwan have seen their forecasts for gross domestic product in 2021 raised by the most across the region since November, and Vietnam's has been slashed by 40 basis points, according to the latest Bloomberg survey results. Fiscal and monetary policy space, economic scarring, and the effectiveness of vaccine programs will determine how quickly these countries can get back on track, said Tuuli McCully, head of Asia Pacific economics at Scotiabank.
