The Delhi legislative assembly election will be held on Feb. 5, the Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday. The results will be out on Feb. 8 (Saturday).

The term of the 70-member assembly ends on Feb. 23, and elections have to be held before that to constitute a new House.

Delhi has 1.55 crore voters and will have over 13,000 polling stations.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the polling day has been deliberately scheduled on Wednesday to encourage voter turnout. The day of polling requires a public holiday.

The Aam Aadmi Party has been in power in the city state since 2015.

The election will see a three-cornered contest between the AAP, Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress.

The last day of nomination of candidates is Jan. 17 and withdrawal can done by Jan. 20.

The political parties have already announced candidates in several seats.

The APP had secured an absolute majority in the 2020 assembly election, winning 67 of the 70 seats. The BJP bagged the remaining three.

Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been the face of AAP, even as he appointed Atishi to replace him after facing jailtime last year in the Delhi liqour policy case.
