US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday said that a potential meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will take place “at the right moment.” Speaking to news agency ANI on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit, Gor said, “Stay tuned, I'm sure it'll happen at the right moment,” when asked about the likelihood of a Modi–Trump meeting.

He also said in a later press conference that the trade deal signing will happen soon. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has extended an invitation to Trump for a future visit, underscoring the growing momentum in India–US relations and the commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral and multilateral collaboration.

The two leaders last met on February 13, 2025, during PM Modi's official working visit to Washington, DC. Throughout 2025, both sides stayed in frequent contact, particularly as trade negotiations gained momentum.

Gor was attending the AI Impact Summit as India formally joined Pax Silica, the US‑led initiative focused on artificial intelligence and supply‑chain security, on 20 February. Also present were visiting US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg and India's Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan, who participated in signing and exchanging the Pax Silica declaration.

Earlier this month, Gor described the India–US partnership as having “limitless potential,” following President Trump's announcement of a fresh bilateral trade agreement aimed at sharply reducing American tariffs on Indian products and strengthening cooperation in energy and technology.

Trade Deal Lays New Groundwork

The latest signing builds on an interim trade agreement concluded earlier this month, which officials said resolved several long‑standing friction points and paved the way for deeper economic integration.

Highlighting the significance of the development, officials noted: “Earlier this month, we concluded the interim trade agreement — a deal that shapes the economic contours of the Indo‑Pacific. We overcame friction points that had held us back for far too long. That agreement wasn't just about trade flows or tariff schedules. It was about two great democracies saying: we will build together, not just buy from one another.”

US Secretary of State Rubio is expected to travel to India in the coming months as part of the upcoming Quad engagements, marking a continuation of high‑level diplomatic exchanges between New Delhi and Washington. His visit will focus on strengthening cooperation within the Quad framework, covering strategic, security, and technological partnerships.
