Madhya Pradesh has experienced a decline in wheat production over the past five years, dropping from 371.98 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2020 to 328.96 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2024, the assembly was informed on Monday.

State Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kansana provided this information in a written response to a question raised by Opposition leader Umang Singhar.

Wheat, particularly the regional Sharbati variety grown in Ashoknagar and other districts, is one of the state's key crops. Singhar had inquired about the production data for wheat and soybean from fiscal 2019-20 to fiscal 2023-24.

The production of wheat in 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 was 356.89 lakh tonnes, 349.23 lakh tonnes, and 349.77 lakh tonnes, respectively, the minister stated in his reply.

While the cumulative production of wheat declined in the last five fiscals, Madhya Pradesh's soybean production increased to 68.36 lakh metric tonnes in fiscal 2024 from 38.56 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2020.

The production of soyabean stood at 33.7 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2021, 53.92 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2022, and 63.32 lakh tonnes in fiscal 2023.
