RBI Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar has been given a year's extension, according to the central bank's officials. The deputy governor handles the departments of currency management, IT, payment and settlement systems, public debt management, fintech and HR, among others.

His term began in April 2021. The appointment was originally for a period of three years. Sankar also oversees digital payments and works around the central bank's digital currency.

Sankar was a student of economics before joining the central bank in 1990, where he was chosen for the dealing room for managing foreign exchange reserves. In early 2010, he helped create a regulatory framework for the government securities market and also helped set up the RBI screen-based anonymous negotiator dealing system for government securities.

The deputy governor has previously also worked with the Indian government, where he helped set up the government's public debt management unit in the ministry of finance, along with having worked as an IMF consultant.
