The key findings of the household consumption expenditure survey, published in February this year, showed that Indian households are spending twice as much as a decade ago, with rural households spending Rs 3,773 a month and urban households spending Rs 6,459.

The full report, published by the government, throws light on state-wise trends. Among the major states, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure is the lowest in Chhattisgarh for rural India at Rs 2,466, as well as in urban areas at Rs 4,483. It is the highest in Kerala at Rs 5,924 in rural areas and in Telangana at Rs 8,158 in urban areas.

  • A wide variation in urban-rural differences in average MPCE is observed across the 18 major states. It is the lowest in Kerala (about 19%) and highest in Chhattisgarh (around 82%), the state having the lowest average MPCE in both rural and urban areas among the major states.

  • A steady decline in MPCE figures is observed with an increase in the size of the household. The MPCE figures for single-member households have been, on average, the highest, while it is observed to be the lowest for households with 10 or more members. The same scenario is found to be present in rural as well as urban areas.

  • The share of food in the total consumption expenditure of rural households varies from 39% (in Kerala) to 54% (in Bihar and Assam). For the urban sector, the share of food in consumption expenditure varies from 35% (in Telangana) to 47% (in Assam and Bihar).

  • The share of cereals in total expenditure in rural India varies from 3% (in Haryana, Kerala and Punjab) to 7% (in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal). In urban India, the share varies from 3% (in Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu) to 6% (in Bihar and Jharkhand).
