India's Sugar Production At 247.61 Lakh Tonnes As Of March: ISMA
Uttar Pradesh contributed the most among the states, with 87.5 lakh tonnes of sugar and 48 factories operational in sugar season 2024-25.
As of March 31, sugar production reached 247.61 lakh tonnes, with 95 factories currently operational across the country, according to Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association. The sugar season usually begins in October and continues until September of the following year.
Uttar Pradesh contributed the most among the states, with 87.5 lakh tonnes of sugar and 48 factories operational in sugar season 2024-25. The highest contribution was due to the improved yield of plant cane, improved cane availability and factories are expected to remain in operation up to mid to late April 2025.
Moreover, sugar recovery has also shown improvement in the second half of the season resulting in better output of sugar.
With six mills still operating, Maharashtra has recorded second highest sugar production of 80.06 lakh tonnes in sugar during the season.
In Karnataka, out of 80 mills, only two remained operational, contributing 39.55 lakh tonnes to the total production to date.
It is worth noting that some factories in South Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season from June/July to September 2025, according to Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association.
The association has estimated its gross sugar production at 264 lakh tonnes for the 2024–25 season, after the gross diversion of 35 lakh tonnes of sugar for ethanol production.
