The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India neared the 1.4 lakh mark on Monday, even as the country resumed domestic flights after two months of lockdown.

India added 6,977 new confirmed Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry's 8 a.m. update. The last 24 hours also saw 154 deaths and 3,280 recoveries.

The total number of cases how stand at 1,38,845, including 57,721 who have recovered and 4,021 deaths. The number of active cases is now at 77,103.

Domestic flight operations resumed across the country in a phased manner, exactly two months after they were grounded to a halt on March 24.

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made the announcement on Twitter, that barring Andhra Pradesh, which will resume operations on May 26 and West Bengal, which will resume operations on May 28, domestic flights will restart across the country starting today.

There will also be limited flights from Mumbai, the minister wrote. Mumbai has crossed 30,000 positive cases as of Sunday evening.

Coronavirus: Global Update

The total number of cases globally has crossed the 5.4 million mark. Over 3.44 lakh people have died from the virus as countries begin to re-open in a phased manner.

Japan is set to end its nationwide state of emergency by lifting the order for Tokyo and other regions. The U.S. is set to limit some travel from Brazil, the country with the second highest cases.

China’s foreign minister warned that some in America were pushing relations to a “new Cold War.” The director of a laboratory in Wuhan, where the virus first took hold, said any claims the pandemic originated at the institute are fabricated.

Forty-two new coronavirus cases were detected in Dharavi today, taking the total tally of infections in Mumbai’s largest slum to 1,583, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Ready To Deal With Spike In Covid-19 Cases

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the government is ready to deal with the situation if there is a spike in Covid-19 cases in the National capital.

He said 2,000 new beds will be available in private hospitals from Monday for novel coronavirus patients, PTI reports.

Delhi has recorded 13,418 cases so far and out of these, around 6,540 have recovered.

SC Allows Air India To Fly For Ten Days With Middle Seat

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed national carrier Air India to keep operating its scheduled flights with the middle seats filled for the next 10 days.

The Apex court observed that the government should be more worried about the health of citizens rather than the health of its commercial airlines, PTI reported.

The top court asked the Bombay High Court to decide the plea against DGCA circulars expeditiously and said Air India and other airlines will have to follow the order given by the HC with regard to safety measures including maintaining of social distancing inside aircraft by keeping middle seats vacant between two passengers in a row.

Flights Resume From Kerala

Domestic air services resumed in Kerala with Air Asia operating the first flight from Bengaluru to Kochi.

42 passengers arrived from the flight at 7 a.m. and state government guidelines were followed, PTI reports.

86 passengers travelled in the return flight. The Kochi airport is expecting 16 flights including those from Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

First Flight Arrives In Jaipur

Domestic flight operations have resumed in the country with the first flight arriving at Jaipur airport from Bengaluru.

The Air Asia flight with 23 passengers on board arrived at 8:30 a.m., PTI reports quoting authorities from Jaipur airport.

The authorities added that out of the 20 flights scheduled for the day from the airport, airlines have already cancelled 11 of them.

Cases Rise In Hamirpur

Hamirpur district in Himachal Pradesh continues to have the highest number of Covid-19 positive cases in the state, PTI reports.

Total number of cases rose to 63 after one more person, a returnee from Mumbai, tested positive for the disease.

The total number of cases in Himachal Pradesh now stand at 210 with 57 active cases in Hamirpur district.

Maharashtra To Resume Flights

Maharashtra will resume commercial flights on Monday with reduced domestic services as the state continues to report the highest number of Covid-19 cases.

The state will allow 50 flights per day from the earlier 200, Bloomberg News reports, citing a statement from the Mumbai Airport authorities.

Hotspot States

Maharashtra continued to have the highest number of cases in the country, adding 3,041 fresh cases. Total Covid-19 positive cases in the state crossed the 50,000 mark.

Tamil Nadu crossed the 16,000 mark while the total number of cases in Gujarat and Delhi stood at 14,056 and 13,418 respectively.
