Meanwhile, India has vaccinated 121.1 crore people, with 73.6 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry data showed. Total number of tests done during the previous day was 9.69 lakh.
The World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said the new strain discovered by South African researchers is a “variant of concern”. India, among other countries, has stepped up screening of all overseas visitors traveling from or through South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong after its discovery.
India has also restarted shipments of Covid-19 vaccines to the Covax initiative, a much needed boost for the beleaguered global sharing body that has struggled to inoculate the world’s poorest nations.
Global Update
Globally, the coronavirus cases have topped 26 crore, with more than 51.8 lakh deaths. Over 786 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the world.
