Who is Cyrus Mistry?

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry, 44, formally took over the reins of the $100 billion Tata Sons on Friday, December 28, 2012. Tata Sons is the holding company for all the diversified Tata group firms, which have interest in the software, automobile, steel, hospitality and retail sectors. Mr Mistry replaced Ratan Tata, who stepped down after turning 75. He was formally appointed chairman early December. Mr Mistry had joined the Tata group in 2006 as a director and has held non-executive positions on boards of several other Tata companies earlier. (Read: Five big challenges for Cyrus Mistry) He was appointed the deputy chairman of Tata Sons in November 2011 by a committee that had been searching for Ratan Tata's successor. Mr Mistry, who was one of the members of the selection committee, recused himself once the four other members suggested him as a candidate for the job. Mr Mistry was the managing director of construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group before his appointment as chairman designate of Tata Sons. He joined the Shapoorji Pallonji Group in 1991 as a director. Thereafter, he has been credited with taking the group that employs over 23,000 employees and has strong presence in India, besides Middle East and Africa, to newer heights. He is the younger son of construction tycoon Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry, who holds about an 18 per cent stake in Tata Sons, making him the single largest shareholder in the $100 billion conglomerate. Mr Mistry is married to Rohika Chagla, the daughter of lawyer Iqbal Chagla. He has an elder brother - Shapoor Mistry and one of his sisters is married to Noel Tata, Ratan Tata's half-brother. He is an avid golfer. Born on July 4, 1968, Mr Mistry completed his graduation in civil engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. He also holds a Master's degree in management from the London Business School and is a Fellow at the Institution of Civil Engineers. Besides Tata Sons and Shapoorji Pallonji Group, Mr Mistry has also served as a director on board of several other firms, including Forbes Gokak and United Motors (India).
