Kerala's Vizhinjam deep-sea port has secured environmental clearance from the Union Environment Ministry for the next two phases of construction, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a social media post.

The clearance will enable the port's completion by 2028, ahead of schedule, Vijayan said.

"A major milestone for Kerala's maritime sector as the @PortOfVizhinjam gets environmental clearance from @moefcc for the next 2 phases of development. This will ensure that the port is completed by 2028, way ahead of its schedule, unlocking new opportunities for maritime trade and industrial growth," he said on 'X' (formerly known as Twitter).

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., India's largest port developer, developed the Vizhinjam deep-water port under a public-private partnership model at an estimated cost of Rs 8,867 crore.

Adani obtained the commercial commissioning certificate for the port on Dec. 4, following a successful trial run. The Kerala state government expects Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commission the port once a date is finalised.
