Alternate powertrains or engines are the future, according to Girish Wagh, executive director at Tata Motors Ltd. Speaking exclusively with NDTV Profit, he said that the transition towards zero emission vehicles will happen through natural gas and alternate fuels like CNG, LPG and bio-fuels.
Currently, the company offers the light commercial vehicle ‘Ace' in an electric powertrain. On the medium and heavy commercial side, there are multiple forms of innovation in powertrains.
Wagh highlighted Tata Motors' efforts on testing the transition towards zero-emission vehicles will happen through natural gas. They invested in alternate fuel, and now have CNG, LNG and biofuel opportunities as well, he said. Growth in natural gas infrastructure will also support in increasing penetration, according to him.
The Kirit Parikh panel recommendations on natural gas pricing have also reduced uncertainty on natural gas pricing which was seen last year, he said.
The company is currently investing in battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric as well as hydrogen internal combustion engines. Their strategy on light roads for intracity travel will see battery electric vehicles take a larger role. They already have roughly 5,000 ACE EVs and roughly 2,700 electric buses on the road today.
They are also working on hydrogen with fuel cell electric and internal combustion engine options for heavy-duty long-distance applications.
