Three Easy Tips to Protect Your Passwords

Three Easy Tips to Protect Your Passwords

None

(Bloomberg) -- We all have a password – or 20 – for our online accounts, but on their own they're not enough. Luckily there are a few easy steps you can take to keep your accounts safe. The video above walks you through the instructions. We'll take Twitter as an example.

1. Set up two-factor authentication

All major web services offer some version of this. To set up two-factor authentication on Twitter:

  • Go to "Account" on the upper right corner of the screen
  • Select "Settings and Privacy"
  • Click "Security"
  • Check the box to turn on "Verify login requests"
  • Twitter will send you a verification code

2. Choose from three different options

You'll see the following options for two-factor authentication settings:

  • Receive a text every time someone tries to login. At a minimum, you should turn on this setting for all your accounts.
  • Even more secure are the one-time codes the app generates when you try to login. Each code is synced only with your phone and Twitter.
  • You can generate a backup code that proves you're you if you lose the device

3. Ditch your password manager

These apps have been hacked in the past. If you really want to keep your password secure, write it down on paper.
