India's largest truckmaker Tata Motors Ltd. reported its highest sales in four-and-a-half years as strict implementation of load restrictions pushed up demand for commercial vehicles.

Sales rose 25 percent in September to 53,965 units. Higher volumes were aided by a strong ramp-up in production, growing demand for newly launched products and higher customer uptick owing to festive season, the company said in an exchange filing.

Commercial vehicle sales increased 29 percent to 36,679 units compared to September last year. The segment contributed 68 percent of the company's total domestic sales.

The medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales grew at 25 percent, led by fleet expansion on the back of restrictions on overloading. It launched new 37-tonne and 49-tonne tractor trailers that saw good traction from fleet operators, the company said. The pick-up category which accounts for over 10 percent of the monthly sales saw a growth of 50 percent, led by the launch of Tata Xenon Yodha.

Passenger Vehicles

Passenger vehicle sales rose 18 percent to 17,286 units, driven by demand for the Tiago hatchback, the Tigor compact sedan and the Hexa SUV. For the first half of the financial year, the category grew 12 percent to 72,665 units.

Tata Motors bagged an order from Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. to supply 10,000 electric cars to the government. It would initially supply 500 units by November-end.
