Tata Communications eyes over Rs 400 crore media services revenue in 5 years

Internet services company Tata Communications expects revenues of over Rs 400 crore in the next five years from its media content transcoding and delivery service segment. "The global market for media content transcoding and delivery services is estimated at $70 billion. We should be able to capture about 1 per cent share of this revenue in about next five years ... about $70 million," Tata Communications' business head of Media Services, Sameer Kanse told PTI. The actual figure may change as per the growth of market, he added. The company launched the new service about six months back under which it converts video content into digital form, stores it in data centre, provides access to authorised person only on internet with additional softwares to facilitate workflow in media houses. "This service is new but there is need for it. One of the very big media houses down south lost about 20 per cent of its content in rain due to moisture on tapes. They have also approached us after realising that traditional way of storing tapes is not safe," Mr Kanse said. Tata Communications has already partnered with media group Viacom18 where it has started broadcast quality video transcoding and delivery service using cloud. "We are working with 3-4 media companies on proof of concept. Media industry generally follows trend. Apart from Indian companies, we are seeing interest from the UK and the US based media houses and even working on proof of concept with them," he said. Mr Kanse said that through this new service Tata Communications is also looking to help media industry bring down piracy and leakages of movies. "The system will reduce leakages in the media industry. There is threat of videos getting pirated when it is done manually. Under digital system, only authorised people get access to video after they log into system. The owner of the tapes gets to know who accessed tape and when which we expect will bring down piracy threats drastically," he said. Tata Communications has pan-India network to deliver managed solutions to multi-national enterprises, service providers and Indian consumers. The Tata Global Network includes one of the submarine cable networks, a Tier-1 IP network, with connectivity to more than 200 countries. The company had reported consolidated revenues of Rs 17,212.95 crore in 2012-13.
