India's second-largest, state-run oil producer has made a natural gas discovery at a well drilled in Tinsukia, Assam.

“The discovery will open up new areas for further oil and gas exploration in Assam and would help in enhancing the gas production with future appraisal and development activities," Oil India Ltd. said in a statement on Friday.

The Dinjan-1 well, in Tinsukia petroleum mining lease in the upper Assam basin, has encountered about 10 metres of hydrocarbon-bearing sands. On testing, it produced gas at the rate of 115,000 standard cubic metres per day.

Oil India, whose majority of operations are concentrated in Northeast India, did not indicate the reserves the discovery may hold.

On Friday, Oil India shares fell 0.16% to Rs 91.75 apiece on BSE while the benchmark Sensex rose 0.20% to end the day at 43,443.00 points.
