(Bloomberg) -- A storm that spawned deadly tornadoes across the South and dumped snow on the Great Plains is now making for a cold, wet commute in New York.
By dawn, ice and snow had shifted to rain in Manhattan, but sleet was falling north and west of the city, said Marc Chenard, a senior branch forecaster at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center.
“In the city it will be predominantly rain from now on,” Chenard said by telephone. After the storm clears, temperatures could fall to 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 Celsius) in Central Park late Wednesday.
The same system could bring severe thunderstorms to parts of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. Winter weather advisories are in effect from Illinois to Maine. Vermont and New Hampshire could get as much as 6 inches of snow, Chenard said. But most cities along the coast will just see rain.
On Monday, the storm spawned a rash of tornadoes in Louisiana, Mississippi and elsewhere, killing one person and injuring nine, according to the U.S. Storm Prediction Center.
