The MSC IRINA, the world's largest container ship by (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit capacity, is scheduled to dock at the Adani Group's Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday, staying until Tuesday.
This visit is its first to a South Asian port, showcasing Vizhinjam's ability to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels. The port, managed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, has recently hosted other significant vessels.
This seaport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2.
The MSC IRINA, with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, measures 399.9 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, making it a major player in global shipping.
Designed to transport large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA enhances trade routes and logistics efficiency, IANS reported.
Launched in March 2023 and sailing under the Liberian flag, the MSC IRINA can stack containers up to 26 tiers high, surpassing its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by 150 TEUs. The MSC IRINA exceeds the capacity of its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by 150 TEUs.
Adhering to modern environmental standards, the ship incorporates energy-efficient technologies that reduce carbon emissions by up to 4%, thereby minimising its environmental impact while ensuring high operational performance, as per IANS
The seaport is a flagship project of the Kerala government and was constructed in a landlord model on a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer basis. Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. is the private partner in this venture and began construction on Dec. 5, 2015.
