(Bloomberg) -- Rival Libyan militias agreed Monday to a truce after several days of fighting on the outskirts of Tripoli killed at least 12 people and stoked fears of a return to the violence that gripped the capital last year.
The armed groups reached the deal in a ceremony aired by Libyan broadcasters. The clashes started on Wednesday and were the worst near the city since last September.
The Tripoli Protection Force, which is loyal to the United Nations-backed central government, had said it was forced to strike back after the rival militia failed to comply with a deal to withdraw from the Qasr ben Gashir area south of the capital.
