Japan’s ANA Airlines Furloughs 5,000 Cabin Crew Due to Outbreak

(Bloomberg) --

ANA Airlines, a unit of ANA Holdings Inc., is putting a third of its total workforce on temporary leave as passenger and flight volumes shrink during the global coronavirus pandemic.

The furloughs, which will last several days for each of 5,000 staff members, will start as soon as April for a period as long as a year, a spokesman for the company said Thursday. The proposal was delivered to the airline's labor union as well. The measure applies to the majority of ANA's cabin crew who are full-time employees.

Airlines across the globe have been battered as countries clamp down on domestic and international travel to combat the spread of the virus. Within the last 24 hours, airlines have been retrenching, with Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Delta Air Lines Inc. parking a total of 1,500 planes and Qantas Airways Ltd. laying off close to 30,000 employees.

ANA has cut its international flights by about 60%. The furloughs were earlier reported by the Nikkei newspaper.
