India's domestic air traffic grew 17.4 percent in May, with airlines ferrying over 100 lakh passengers compared to 86.7 lakh passengers in the same month last year.

Interglobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo, the largest domestic airline by market share, returned to the top spot last month in terms of punctuality with 85 percent of its flights arriving and departing on schedule. The Gurugram-based carrier was ranked  third in terms of on-time performance in April this year after retaining the top position in March, which it had lost to rival airline SpiceJet Ltd. last year.

IndiGo also flew the maximum number of passengers counting up to 41.91 lakh, cornering 41.2 percent of the total market share, according to monthly traffic data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday.

SpiceJet meanwhile continued to amass the highest seat occupancy, registering 94.4 percent load factor during the reporting month.

"We are bullish that this high double-digit growth on a much higher base will continue in the coming months driven by stable oil prices and increased capacity from the airlines”, said Sharat Dhall, chief operating officer of Yatra.com. The rollout of government's regional connectivity scheme UDAN is also expected to give a further filip to the market in the medium term, he added.

Burdened state-owned airline Air India Ltd. received the most number of complaints at 245, in May and it only managed to resolve less than half of them. Air Vistara continued its impressive performance in the customer satisfaction domain with just 0.1 complaints for 10,000 passengers carried.
