India will join the Pax Silica - a US-led strategic alliance launched in December 2025 to secure the global artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor supply chain. The move will reduce dependence on the non-aligned nations. The two countries also signed the Pax Silica Declaration on Friday, the US Embassy in New Delhi said. The ceremony will be followed by a fireside chat with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg, it added.

This will also solidify the bilateral ties between India and US after a spell of severe strain in the relations. The initiative was launched in December to build a secure, resilient, and innovation-driven supply chain for critical minerals and AI. The signing comes days after Helberg said the US is discussing a critical minerals price floor system with allies and partners. It marks the latest step in efforts by Washington and its partners to shield Western companies from China's pressure in those markets.

What is Pax Silica Summit?

The Pax Silica Summit was held in Washington on Dec. 12 where partner nations signed the Pax Silica declaration. The declaration lays out a shared vision of deep economic and technology cooperation across supply chains -- from raw materials through semiconductors and AI infrastructure -- and commitment to mutual prosperity and security. The member nations of the Pax Silica include Australia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor last month announced an invitation to New Delhi to join the strategic alliance. One of the key pillars of Pax Silica was to establish a durable economic order to drive AI-powered prosperity across partner nations. "We recognise that a reliable supply chain is indispensable to our mutual economic security," according to the Pax Silica declaration. "We also recognize that artificial intelligence represents a transformative force for our long-term prosperity and that trustworthy systems are essential to safeguarding our mutual security and prosperity," it said.

At the signing ceremony of the Pax Silica Declaration between India and the US, CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, says, "...Pax Silica focuses on making sure that the supply chains are safe and secure and encourages greater commercial partnerships across key technologies. So let me congratulate the US and India on this historic moment. Alongside the recent trade agreement, this will lay a strong foundation for a robust US-India tech partnership for many years to come."

India-US Trade Deal

Earlier this month, Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a trade deal that reduced what had been among the highest US tariffs on Indian goods. India has also scaled back its imports of Russian oil, addressing a key US demand. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal also announced on Friday that the interim trade agreement between India and the US is likely to be signed in March and operationalised in April. India's free trade agreements (FTAs) with the UK and Oman are also likely to be implemented in April. A three-day meeting between Indian and American officials to finalise the legal text for an interim trade agreement will begin in the US on February 23.
