HDFC Bank Ltd.'s decision on Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan's tenure could determine whether uncertainty around the lender's leadership eases or continues to weigh on its shares, Macquarie said.
The brokerage sees an equal probability of Jagdishan receiving either a full three-year term or an extension of about six months. The two outcomes could have different implications for the stock, according to the note.
A fresh three-year term would remove the uncertainty around the CEO position and could help the shares find support at current levels, Macquarie said. In that case, the bank's future performance would again be driven by its fundamentals.
A shorter extension could have the opposite effect. It may suggest that the board needs more time to work through the succession process, Macquarie said.
“The uncertainty will linger, and the new CEO could take time to settle in,” the brokerage said, adding that the stock price “could fall further” under that scenario.
Leadership Decision In Focus
The decision on Jagdishan's tenure has therefore emerged as an important trigger for investors, according to Macquarie's assessment. A full-term renewal would bring clarity, while a temporary extension could leave the succession question open for longer.
Macquarie said the shorter tenure could give the board time to recommend another list of candidates to the Reserve Bank of India.
The brokerage expects HDFC Bank's four-member nomination and remuneration committee to recommend a candidate to the board, which would then seek approval from the central bank.
For investors, the key issue is now whether the bank opts for a full three-year renewal that ends the uncertainty around the top job or a shorter extension that keeps the leadership question unresolved, according to Macquarie.
