India's national capital will overtake Tokyo as the world's most populous city in a decade.

That's according to a recent report by United Nation's Population Division. Tokyo is currently the world's most populated city with 37 million people followed by New Delhi at 29 million. Not only will New Delhi outpace Tokyo in the next 10 years, population in India is expected to outpace China during that period, said the report entitled 2018 Revision of World Urbanisation Prospects.

The UN also estimates that two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas by 2050, with India, China and Nigeria leading the growth.

That means policies will have to be geared towards cost-effective and economical housing and other means of sustainable development in these urban areas, the report said.
