Vipin Sondhi, managing director and chief executive officer of Ashok Leyland Ltd., has resigned from his position citing personal reasons.

Sondhi, who joined in 2019 after a head-hunting exercise lasting more than a year, will step down from his position on Dec. 31.

Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja, who had stepped in the executive role in the intervening period after Sondhi's predecessor Vinod Dasari resigned, will once again take up an executive role, India's second-largest medium and heavy commercial vehicle maker said in a statement.

“Sondhi has expressed his intention to devote more time to take care of certain personal and family commitments in the post-Covid-19 pandemic situation, that require his extended presence in New Delhi,” the statement said.

Before joining Ashok Leyland, Sondhi was the managing director and chief executive of the construction equipment manufacturer JCB India Ltd.

Sondhi will in the meanwhile support and facilitate a smooth management transition, the statement said. The company's board will meet shortly to decide on identifying his successor.
