Air India Ltd. is set to hold a key board meeting on May 7 to discuss the matter of succession for its chief executive officer (CEO) position as well as the firm's financial stress, as per sources close to the matter. Prominent figures who are expected to be in attendance include Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson among others.

Campbell Wilson had announced his resignation from the role on April 7. Wilson will continue on in the position until a new CEO is named.

The company's board is likely to decide on the name of Air India's new CEO at this board meeting.

Former Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan and Nipun Aggarwal CCO of Air India are likely to be the top candidates in the running for the position of the next Air India CEO.

Air India's board is set to review the airline's financial performance along with shaping and evaluating a transformation roadmap for the company moving forward.

The firm has likely incurred losses amounting to more than Rs 20,000 crore in the fiscal 2026. Financial year 2027 is also expected to remain financially challenging for Air India with factors such as a hike in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs weighing on the its balance sheet.

Fuel costs have been a global issue due to the blockade of the Strait Hormuz that brought about due to the US-Israel-Iran War that began on Feb. 28.

Wilson has reportedly told staff that the extensive rise in jet fuel price along with airspace closures and longer flying routes, has lead to many of the airline's international flights to become unprofitable to operate.
