Juneteenth Holiday 2025: The United States will celebrate Juneteenth 2025 on Thursday, a federal holiday observed annually on June 19 to mark the end of slavery. On this day, non-essential government offices in the US will remain closed in observance of the holiday. Many departments at the local, state and federal levels observe a day off to mark America's youngest federal holiday.

In addition to government offices, all public and private schools and universities, post office services and banks will remain closed on this day.

The US stock exchanges, including NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), will also remain closed on this day.

Juneteenth, often referred to as America’s Second Independence Day, became a federally recognized holiday in 2021. Millions of Americans observe this paid-off holiday to honour and reflect on the end of slavery in their country.

The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger reached Galveston Bay, Texas, with 2,000 Union soldiers to announce the freedom of over 2,50,000 enslaved Black individuals. This was more than two years after the then US President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

This is one of the occasions when the US stock markets observe a holiday. This year, a total of 10 weekday holidays are scheduled for the US stock exchanges, according to the NYSE website. Following the Juneteenth holiday, the next stock market weekday holiday will be observed on July 4, which marks the US Independence Day.
