US President Donald Trump took a sharp jibe at French President Emmanuel Macron's colorful sunglasses during his hour-long address at World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, where he scorned his European allies over the Greenland dispute.
Macron had appeared wearing blue mirrored aviator-style sunglasses at the WEF stage earlier this week, prompting questions around his wardrobe choices and making him the center of attention.
"I watched him yesterday (Emmanuel Macron) with those beautiful sunglasses. What the hell happened?" Trump remarked while referencing the instance.
While he did not address the reason for wearing those glasses in the speech, his office clarified stating that the sunglasses were worn to protect his eyes due to a burst blood vessel.
The French President has been seen wearing those glasses on multiple occassions, including during his meetings in Paris. He also made an appearance at a military event in southern France with a visibly red and irritated eye, which sparked speculation about his health.
Trump's comments come a couple of days after he shared screenshots of his chats with Macron, wherein the French President marked apprehensions regarding Washington's bid to takeover Greenland. On the same day, the US President threatened to levy tariffs as high as 200% on French champagne and wine if Macron snubs his invite to join 'Peace of Board' for Gaza.
"I'll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he'll join. But he doesn't have to join," he said.
