India celebrates Republic Day on January 26. Indians eagerly wait to celebrate the day, which is marked by patriotic events and activities organised across the country. The highlight of the day includes the majestic Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path near India Gate in New Delhi.
A host of events are organised by the government to celebrate the day, which showcases India's prowess as democratic nation. The colourful Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path includes contingents from the Indian Armed Forces and paramilitary forces, as well as various government ministries and departments.
Ahead of the celebrations this year, there is confusion over whether this is the 76th or 77th Republic Day of India.

On Aug. 15, 1947, India gained its long-awaited independence from the British. Under the British Parliament Act, British India was segregated into two independent countries of India and Pakistan. Following this, a draft committee was formed to write the Constitution of India, which presented a draft Constitution to the Constituent Assembly in November 1948.
The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on Nov. 26, 1949.
India has the longest written Constitution in the world. After numerous revisions and discussions, 308 members of the Constituent Assembly signed two handwritten copies on Jan. 24, 1950. The Constitution of India officially came into effect on Jan. 26, 1950.
Republic Day has been determined from the year the Constitution came into effect. Therefore, Jan. 26, 2025, is the 76th Republic Day of India.

The theme for this year’s Republic Day celebration is 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas' (Golden India: Heritage and Progress), which will revolve around India’s rich cultural heritage and the journey of the country’s growth and development over the years.
President Draupadi Murmu will unfurl the tricolour at Kartavya Path and honour the brave soldiers of the nation. She will also confer the Paramvir Chakra, Vir Chakra, and Ashok Chakra awards to those who have shown exceptional dedication to the nation with their bravery.
