Continuous downpour in Mumbai has caused its key artificial lake in Powai to overflow on Tuesday morning, exceeding its capacity of 5.45 billion litres.
In a post on X, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared a video of the overflowing Powai Lake, which is not used for drinking purposes. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area over the past two days caused the lake to reach full capacity and begin overflowing, with the water level at 195.1 feet.

The water levels in other reservoirs of Mumbai have also increased due to intense monsoon showers, which are expected to continue until June 22, the India Meteorological Department said.
With the complete onset of the southwest monsoon, the seven key lakes in Mumbai, crucial for the drinking water supply, have also recorded a surge in useful water content levels. The seven lakes are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi. These lakes are spread across Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts, with a total capacity of useful content at 14.47 lakh million litres.
On Wednesday morning, the official data showed that the useful water content in these seven lakes has crossed 10% of the total storage capacity. The overall water levels stood at 10.19%, with 1,47,488 million litres of usable water available out of a total capacity of 1,447,363 million litres.

More Rains Expected In Mumbai, Thane
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai until June 19. The weather agency predicted light to moderate rain in isolated areas during this period. In the subsequent two days, moderate rains will continue to lash the city. The neighbouring district of Thane is also expected to witness similar weather conditions for the next five days.
“Light to moderate rainfall is likely at most or many places across Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada from June 18 to 20. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are also expected during this period,” the IMD said on Wednesday.
It added that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and the Gujarat region from June 18 to 23. Saurashtra and Kutch may also experience heavy rain on June 18, 19, 22 and 23.
