Akshaya Tritiya, a festival that blends spiritual devotion with financial aspirations, is being observed today, April 30. Rooted in traditions, the day is widely regarded as an auspicious occasion for new ventures and gold purchases, symbolising never-ending prosperity and success.

Falling on the third day (Tritiya Tithi) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaisakha, as per the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya holds great religious and cultural importance. The word Akshaya means “eternal” or “never diminishing”, reflecting the belief that anything begun or acquired on this day — especially gold — will continue to flourish.

According to Drik Panchang, the most favourable time for purchasing gold begins at 5:41 am and continues until 2:12 pm on Wednesday, April 30.

The day usually begins with a sacred bath and the cleansing of the home’s prayer space. Devotees lay a red or yellow cloth on a platform and place idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kuber upon it.

The Akshaya Tritiya puja begins with purifying the idols using Ganga jal (holy water), followed by the application of sandalwood paste and a vermilion tilak. Devotees then offer raw rice, betel leaves, durva grass, coconut and traditional sweets. Sacred hymns such as the Kanakadhara Stotram, Kuber Chalisa, Vishnu Namavali and Ganesh Chalisa are recited during the ritual. The puja concludes with the performance of the traditional Aarti, marking the end of the sacred ceremony.

One popular tale in Hindu mythology recounts how Lord Krishna, pleased with Draupadi’s faith during the Pandavas’ exile, gifted them the Akshaya Patra, a magical vessel that never ran out of food. Another story narrates how Lord Kuber, after receiving blessings from Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma, was appointed the divine treasurer of heaven on this day.

It is believed that Akshaya Tritiya is the time for blessings, success and new beginnings. For many, buying gold is not merely a financial move — it’s an expression of faith in future abundance.
