Keys may soon be a thing of the past, making way for facial recognition on a broader scale when it comes to entering your home. In his Bloomberg newsletter, Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple is reportedly developing a new smart doorbell camera that unlocks doors using Face ID.
The device, which is still in early stages of development, is anticipated to have sophisticated Face ID-powered facial recognition. The technology will enable the device to recognise a house’s inhabitants and unlock smart locks that are compatible.
Much like Face ID on an iPhone, when the smart doorbell detects a house occupant that matches its biometric data, it will automatically unlock the door. The device is anticipated to have the Secure Enclave chip, which improves privacy by processing and storing biometric data separately from the main hardware.
It is also likely to be integrated with Apple’s HomeKit Accessory Protocol, which is a communication protocol that enables Apple devices to securely communicate with HomeKit accessories. While the doorbell could operate with third-party smart locks that are now available on the market, Apple might potentially partner with a lock maker in order to provide a packaged doorbell-lock system.
Apple’s forthcoming Proxima wireless chip is anticipated to be used in the smart doorbell. The in-house chip is expected to have a combination Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology and could also power other devices such as Apple TV devices and Next-generation HomePod Mini. To safeguard privacy, the device might additionally have a secure enclave feature, according to reports.
The smart doorbell is one part of Apple’s push into the smart home segment. Additionally, the tech major is reported to launch a new 6-inch display smart home hub in 2025. In addition to supporting FaceTime, this hub can play videos and operate a variety of smart home gadgets. Apple is also creating an in-home security camera along with the hub.
Apple’s smart doorbell, which will compete with brands such as Amazon Ring’s range of smart home and home security devices, is expected to see a market launch only in late 2025.
