IPL 2025 Playoffs: The playoff race of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come down to the wire, with three teams battling for the final spot in the top four. Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings have already punched their tickets to the next round. GT breached the 18-point cut-off by securing a 10-wicket win over Delhi Capitals on Sunday. RCB and PBKS hold the second and third spots with 17 points each. Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals by ten runs in their last game, while Bengaluru had to share points with Kolkata Knight Riders after incessant rain washed out their clash at Chinnaswamy.

Four teams–Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders– have already crashed out of the competition. Now, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants will be vying for the remaining playoff berth. With the league stage inching closer to the end, let’s take a look at how DC, MI and LSG can qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Mumbai Indians (MI) Playoff Qualification Scenarios Explained

MI can also qualify with 16 points by winning one of their remaining two matches. If Hardik Pandya-led side loses to Delhi Capitals on Wednesday (May 21), they will have to wait for the outcome of Delhi’s game against Punjab Kings on Saturday. If Punjab wins against Delhi, Mumbai needs to defeat Punjab in their match on Monday. A Delhi win against Punjab means Mumbai is out of the playoff race.

Delhi Capitals (DC) Qualification Scenarios Explained

After a humiliating loss to Gujarat, DC now find themselves in the fifth spot in the league standings. The Axar Patel-led side must beat Mumbai in the upcoming fixture to stay in contention. If they add four more points, Delhi will be in the playoffs. DC will face Punjab in their final league game.

If they lose to PBKS, Delhi will need Punjab to beat Mumbai and Lucknow to lose at least one of their last three matches. In that case, Delhi will qualify with 15 points.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) Qualification Scenarios Explained

Unlike their two playoff rivals, LSG still have three matches (against Hyderabad, Gujarat and Bengaluru) to be played. Lucknow can accumulate a maximum of 16 points if they win all of their remaining games. It, however, might not be enough for qualification.

For them to have any chances of qualification, Delhi will need to finish with 15 points if they beat Mumbai but lose to Punjab. MI also should not win against PBKS to allow LSG to reach the playoffs. If both Mumbai and Lucknow have 16 points at the end of the league stage, the net run rate (NRR) will come into consideration.
